Graphic design students make impressive showing in Graphis design competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Six projects by Stuckeman School graphic design students in the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture earned silver awards in the 2024 Graphis New Talent Awards competition, which recognizes the best student work from around the world. Another 10 projects earned honorable mention nods.

For the annual international competition, a jury of design industry experts selects entries at the platinum, gold and silver levels, in addition to honorable mentions, in the following design categories: advertising, book design, branding, editorial design, exhibits, film/video, illustration, infographics, interaction design, logos, motion graphics, packaging, poster photography, product design, type fonts, website design and more.

Fourth-year students Carson Schultz and Jessica Stencel earned a silver award in the poster design category for their “Off Limits Poster” under the guidance of Taylor Shipton, assistant teaching professor of graphic design.

Fellow fourth-year students Kathryn Gross and Gabrielle Harris were recognized with silver awards in the editorial design category with their respective projects “Sewn Magazine“ and “Bewitched Magazine” with Shipton.

Wyatt Poorman, a third-year student, also earned silver with Emily Burns, assistant professor of graphic design, in the editorial category with his “Digital Dump Sustainable Quarterly” submission.

Eden Balog, a third-year student, had her “Social Impact” design earn silver in the poster category under the guidance of Burns.

The final project earning silver honors went to third-year students Colette Albertson, Will Welsh, Emma Cohen and Madison Laufer in the branding category for their “Museum of Flight Branding” entry. The group completed the design during their studio course with Burns, along with guest collaborator Thomas Wilder, global principal at Wolf Olins and a Penn State graphic design alumnus.

Projects that received honorable mentions were:

  • “Prism Typeface and Type Specimen,” by third-year student Rachel Lieb with Burns in the type fonts category.
  • “Everyone is a Cat in Shrödinger’s Box,” by third-year student Jingyun Xiao with Burns in the poster category.
  • “Limitless Branding,” Class of 2023 with Huiwon Lim, assistant professor of graphic design, in the branding category.
  • “Retro Machines Branding,” by third-year student Rachel Lieb with Shipton in the branding category.
  • “Reality Magazine,” by fourth-year student Megan Dale with Shipton in the editorial category.
  • “Breakfast Data Visualization Posters,” by third-year student Megan Marflak with Lim in the infographics category.
  • “Marchez Poster,” by Lieb with Burns in the poster category.
  • “Tea Data Visualization Posters,” by Xiao with Lim in the infographics category.
  • “Birdstrike Information Graphic” by  Forough Yazdanpanah, a master’s student in art with a concentration in graphic design, with Lim in the infographics category.
  • “Echo Branding,” by 2023 alumna Kimi Mate with Lim in the branding category.
