Expect to see these interior design trends in 2025
Rich and earthy color palettes with pops of color; mixing traditional and rustic pieces with sleek modern interiors; and bringing nature inside — these will all be interior design trends for 2025.
The prevailing theme for next year is a transition away from simple modern interiors, with more of a focus on warmth, color and charm coming to the forefront.
If you need some inspiration to fresh your space for the new year, you’re in luck. But remember that these are just trends, and interior design is ultimately up to personal taste.
“If you do something that you love it’s not going to look bad. It’s also going to be your space, and you have to be true to yourself,” said Elizabeth Crafton, owner and principal designer of Lilabeth Interiors in Cherry Hill. “Don’t worry to much about the trends and don’t jump on something just because it’s a trend. Really stay true to who you are and what it is that you love.”
Here are some of the things you can expect to see in interior design trends for 2025, according to New Jersey designers:
Rich, earthy color palettes with pops of color
The neutral tones that have seemingly taken over interior design in recent years aren’t expected to go anywhere in 2025. But we can expect to see more rich and earthy color palettes, with subtle pops of color, take over in the new year.
“We are going to keep with the neutrals, but there’s going to be a lot of earthy tones in the red, yellow and green shades,” said Carmen Henriquez-Cruz, an interior design with BoConcept in Paramus. “It’s burnt colors, like burnt reds and burnt yellows.”
Crafton said that in addition to these colors, she expects to see warm and rustic shades of mauve, purple and peach becoming more popular in the new year.
These shades will likely be used most often as accents in interior design, she said, such as in area rugs, pillows and drapes, rather than as primary colors in a space.
“I think that those certain colors I could see working because they’re not too far off from what people currently have,” Crafton said. “It’s a very rich palette, but it’s being done in such a different, modern way.”
Color drenching
Color drenching — a technique that involves painting a room a single color, including the walls, ceilings, doors and trim — is a trend that has become increasingly popular over the last year or so. Henriquez-Cruz said she believes this is a trend we can expect to see continue into 2025.
There are several ways to play with this trend as well, whether it be using different hues of the same color to paint the room, or using a mix of both gloss and matte finishes to make the room more visually interesting, according to Architectural Digest.
More natural materials
As we continue to stray away from the modern interiors that were trending for so long — defined by simple materials, clean lines and neutral colors — we can expect to see people incorporate more natural materials into their homes in 2025.
Henriquez-Cruz said that adding in the unique shapes and textures of natural materials, like oak and travertine, creates a more rustic and vintage feel to an otherwise overly modern space. She said that balancing these textured materials with smooth surfaces helps make spaces in your home feel more interesting.
“You’re going to see travertine in coffee tables, side tables and many other details,” she said. “Alabaster and marble are also going to stay in 2025, so it’s a mix of smooth and textured materials.”
Mixing traditional and modern pieces together
More people have been returning to traditional styles of interior design in recent years. And while some might not want to fully transition out of the modern details that have been so popular, we can expect to see more homes that have a mix of traditional and modern pieces in 2025.
“What I’m noticing with my clients is that there seems to be a rejection of all of the modern and mid-century modern that we’ve seen over the last several years. There seems to be a return of traditional styles, which is surprising to me,” Crafton said. “A lot of people are telling me that they like a mix of old and new.”
She said she’s been seeing this in younger generations, such as them picking out fine china — something that millennials had moved away from — or searching for unique decorative pieces at antique stores.
To successfully create an appealing blend of traditional and modern style in your space, Crafton said it’s important to stay balanced and not go overboard in one direction over the other. Similarly, she said to stay away from pieces that might be too transitional because they’ll likely not have enough contrast to stand out.
“It’s really about pairing things that are really authentic and far off from each other because that’s how you get the contrast. That’s how you really do it,” she said. “In a modern home, pair antiques with a modern space, or for a very traditional home, add modern furniture to it. That’s a good way to balance that out.”
Accessorizing with gold accents and large plants
For decorative touches, Henriquez-Cruz said that she believes gold accents will be trending in 2025. This could mean bronzed edges on different surfaces or decorative items consistently of polished brass, brushed brass and champagne cold materials.
Bringing nature into your space has also been a popular interior design touch this past year, which will likely continue into 2025. Henriquez-Cruz said filling otherwise empty spots in your home with large plants that adds height to the area helps make the space feel more interesting.
Similarly, filling modern-style vases with dry branches or flowers is another way to create a unique blend of new and old in your home, she said.
