Interior Design Masters hopeful sent home after ‘muddled’ creation

Interior Design Masters’ Emma looked close to tears as she was eliminated from the show over her “muddled” office design.

The latest episode of the BBC series – which is hosted by Alan Carr – saw the hopefuls tasked with transforming basic shipping containers into stunning workspaces that would encourage people to swap homeworking for the office.

However, the art and textiles teacher from North Wales was deemed to have done “too much” in the small space and she was sent packing.

The show sees novice designers redecorating all sorts of different rooms in a bid to win the chance to team up with John Lewis for their very own collection of homewares.

In the instalment on Thursday, 17 April, they had to create offices in shipping units in Bristol, and came up with an array of designs. Emma went with bright pastels, with blue swirls on the walls, plants, and a pink seating area covered with patterned cushions.

She was pleased with the results, saying she hoped she had come up with something “enticing”.

But judge Michelle Ogundehin wasn’t so sure. “I love that Emma has so many ideas and so many concepts,” she said.

“She starts from this position where I think, ‘Oh you’ve referenced Bristol, you’ve referenced the history of the area’ and yet, design is about then narrowing that down into a concept that’s appropriate for here and so I feel she’s got a little muddled.”

“What I said to her last week was there was too much and I feel like I have got too much again,” she said.

Testing out the pale pink chairs, she said: “I like the idea of a softer seating area at the end of the space, it’s just it’s not very soft!”

“Not as comfy as it looks is it?” agreed guest judge Max McMurdo.

After the judging, Ogundehin picked fabric designer Holly as the winner of the round, praising her simple office style. However, Emma, Briony and Bradley were taken through to her sofa for a chat and Emma ended up being eliminated.

The judge told her: “You have all these brilliant ideas but design has got to take you higher than craft and just take that one idea, it’s what I said to you last week, and really have the courage of your convictions. But I want you to know there were moments of genius in both of the designs we have seen so far.”

Emma said it had been a “crazy, wonderful experience on every level”. “I will never ever regret being a part of it,” she said.

Interior Design Masters returns at 8pm on BBC One on Thursday, 24 April.
