The Very British Edit #4: Holiday Entertaining Made Effortless

The Opening Note

As Digital Editor at Homes & Gardens, I’ve spent more than a decade exploring remarkable homes, curating seasonal projects, and discovering the small details that make a space feel truly lived-in. Over the years, I’ve come to love one thing above all: this season, when my home becomes more important than at any other time of year. It’s the time I hunker down, nest, and fully embrace hosting, entertaining, and celebrating with friends and family. Every corner feels more intentional, every detail more meaningful, as I make the home a place for shared moments and joyful gatherings.

For this seventh edition of The Very British Edit, I’ve focused on exactly that: the season when hosting for the holidays becomes a pleasure, and thoughtful design transforms everyday spaces into festive retreats. Tablescapes, glassware, serving pieces, and candles all come together to create a sense of occasion, while home fragrance plays an equally important role in setting the mood. Every year, I make my favourite cinnamon simmer pot recipe – a simple blend of cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange peel, and star anise – that fills the home with a warm, inviting fragrance that signals the start of the holiday season. It’s a small ritual, but one that instantly makes the home feel welcoming and festive.
