Tech Mahindra, a global leader in technology consulting and digital solutions, in collaboration with MIT Technology Review Insights, has released a report highlighting how artificial intelligence (AI) can accelerate sustainability in product design and development. The study underlines that organizations embedding AI into early design and prototyping stages will gain a decisive competitive edge while meeting environmental goals.

The findings reveal that although AI adoption in product development is increasing, many companies remain in the exploratory phase. Full-scale deployment is limited by cost challenges, skill shortages, and fast-changing market conditions. Meanwhile, rising regulatory requirements and societal expectations are pushing enterprises to reduce their environmental footprint while continuing to innovate.

The report notes that up to 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined during the design stage. By using AI-driven tools, companies can optimize for efficiency, sustainability, and manufacturability, significantly reducing waste, emissions, and resource use.

The study also highlights several challenges that organizations face when integrating sustainability into product development. Many customers remain uncertain about what truly defines a sustainable product, which creates confusion in the marketplace. At the same time, companies must navigate an environment of rapidly changing regulations and industry standards, making it difficult to establish consistent long-term strategies.

Another barrier is the shortage of specialized talent capable of applying sustainability principles alongside advanced technologies like AI. In addition, the absence of clear, measurable metrics for tracking progress further complicates efforts to embed sustainability across the design and development cycle. Together, these hurdles slow down large-scale adoption, underscoring the need for structured frameworks and industry-wide alignment to accelerate sustainable innovation.

The research emphasizes that overcoming these hurdles with AI-enabled frameworks will allow enterprises to position sustainability as a driver of innovation, business resilience, and long-term positive impact on the planet.
